Saying goodbye... a letter from Kenna & Doug
I’ve been sitting down to write this for a while now… and honestly, I don’t even know where to begin.
Because how do you wrap up something that has been such a huge part of your life & journey for so long?
After a lot of reflection over the past year, Doug and I have officially made the decision to close Smith & Company Candles.
And while that sentence feels simple… what’s behind it is anything but.
SCC has been part of my life since I was six years old. It started with my parents in 2005, grew into something Doug and I stepped into in 2019... and over the last six years became something so much bigger than we ever imagined.
It was late nights pouring candles…
Packing orders in our basement…
Watching orders come in and wondering if this was actually real…
Growing a community that believed in us and what we were building...
It was the beginning of everything.
The very next year (2020), we poured our hearts into launching Midwest Fragrance Company... a candle and soap supply company built from the same passion and spirit as SCC... and watched, honestly in disbelief, as it grew faster than we ever imagined.
Along the way, we found something we didn’t expect…
A deep love for working with other small business owners and makers... helping them create products, grow their businesses, and build something of their own.
And the truth is… none of that would exist without SCC. It all started here.
With the foundation my parents built… and a simple, beautiful dream they began back in 2005.
This business shaped us, stretched us, and led us into the next chapter of our lives. It gave us so many lessons, challenges, and everything in between.
So while this decision comes with sadness… it also comes with so much peace.
Because this chapter feels complete.
And more than anything, we just feel grateful.
Grateful for my parents, who started this journey.
Grateful for the lessons, the growth, and everything this business gave us.
And so deeply grateful for you... for every order, every kind message, every moment you chose to support our small business.
You were part of this story.
And that means more to us than we can ever fully put into words. 💛
I don’t think there’s a perfect way to end something like this.
But if I had to say one thing, it would be this:
Thank you for being part of our journey.
For growing with us.
For believing in us.
And for helping turn something that started as a small family business into something so meaningful.
This isn’t just the end of a business... it’s the closing of a chapter that changed our lives forever.
And we will carry it with us always.
All our love,
Kenna & Doug 💛
